5 tools to help you with your NZ job search

We’ve made it as easy we can to find a great job in NZ

Last updated: 18 December 2023

It might seem tough to believe, but it wasn’t all that long ago that the main way to find a job in NZ (and in many other parts of the world) was to write letters to companies, or physically walk around and hand out copies of your CV. But, in the same way that we no longer use rangiora leaves as postcards (this really happened – check it out!), you probably know that these long-winded ways of finding jobs are no longer the most common routes.

These days, the vast majority of Kiwi use online job portals, like Trade Me Jobs to find employment. And the good news doesn’t end there. Not only have we provided a platform that brings together thousands of great roles in one place, we have created a ‘bunch of other tools that will help you take your career in the desired direction.

Job hunting tools for NZ job seekers

1. Trade Me Jobs Profile

We’re always looking for ways to make your job search more efficient, and a Trade Me Jobs Profile is one of the least labour intensive ways of job hunting you’ll come across.

Setting up a Trade Me Jobs Profile is easy – you simply enter some basic personal and professional data, as well as some basic info about the types of roles you’re interested in. Then, choose the privacy settings you want, and make your profile live. At this point, your profile will be visible to employers who subscribe to our service (as long as you want it to be) and this means that they can contact you if they have a job vacancy that matches your skills, experiences and interests.

It’s the closest thing to job hunting in your sleep that you will find!

2. Job search filters

Our Trade Me Jobs portal has heaps of different filters to allow you to narrow down your search and find the roles on site that best match what you’re looking for. This includes everything from location to job contract type (e.g. permanent or temp) to whether you want to work from home in your next role.

Our mobile app, and email alerts, means you never need to miss a great opportunity.

3. Saved job searches

Sometimes, hunting for a job can be a marathon rather than a sprint. Or, perhaps, you aren’t looking to leave your current position in a hurry, and are waiting for the right position to come up.

Regardless, our ‘save this search’ feature allows you to keep on top of positions that have appealed. This means that, rather than having to continually come back to Trade Me Jobs and input the same search terms, you can be alerted via email if vacancies matching your criteria are newly uploaded by employers. Not only does this improve the efficiency of your job search, it also means you can get an application in quickly, and not risk missing out on great opportunities simply because you didn’t find them.

Our salary guide can help you evaluate what you're being offered by businesses.

4. Trade Me Job Salary Guide

There are many things that can attract you to a role, from its mission and purpose, to the culture of the organisation you’ll be working for. An equally important part of the picture is your salary.

Not only does your salary have a significant impact on your life (particularly during this cost of living crisis), but it also speaks volumes about how much your employer values your contribution to their organisation. Negotiating a fair salary during your job interview is an art and a science. The science bit of this relies heavily on having good data on salaries in your sector so you can judge what you’re being offered.

Trade Me Jobs’ Salary Guide gives you current data on salaries in NZ, including low, average and high salary info of a role, as well as remuneration trends for this position, allowing you to track change over time.

5. Trade Me Jobs careers advice
