Description
The following auction is for a relatively rare and very elegant Victorian Corner Whatnot Shelf / Etagere / China Display Unit. In lovely condition, this beautifully carved piece is not easy to find. Made of solid Mahogany and has 5 nicely shelves – usually Antique whatnots consist of no more than 3-4 tiers.
The carved dark stained columns support each tier, with interesting finials to the upper corners. Solid Mahogany shelves have interesting shape and bevelled edges. Back panels are carved and have unusual shapes. Colourful and slightly wavy Mahogany grain patterns are rather impressive and also make this piece unique.
The Whatnot is in a very good condition for it's age. Due to both the quality of the craftsmanship and the nature of the item we believe that this piece is of genuine Victorian origins, most likely late 19th or beginning of 20th Century.
Measurements: H 147cm, Max W 62cm (bottom shelf), Min W 45cm (top shelf), Max D 45cm.
Whatnots / Etageres were introduced in the latter years of the 18th Century in France and served as a display section for small ornaments. They generally consist of three to four tiers / shelves and are intricate and delicate in design. The following example is no exception, a very nice piece of Antique furniture for any manner of household whether Modern or older / Antique in design. Both decorative and useful, this is an elegant and classic piece.
