Description
The New Zealand Company’s Native Reserves by Roland L. Jellicoe, hard covered book of 116 pages and printed in 1930. There is no dust jacket. The contents of this 90+ year old book are pretty tidy really. The faults that I can see are, stain on the top left of the front cover and a couple of very small ones on the back cover (see 2nd pic). The odd very very small brown foxing mark on the page edge up to the contents page at the front. When looking at the book from the front side ( when book is shut) you can see a few brown foxing marks which only show when reading the book up until the contents page as already stated. At the time this book was compiled from Parliamentary papers, Departmental Documents and other Authentic Sources of Information. The object of the book is to place on record the history of those Native Lands in the provinces of Wellington and Nelson which were set apart by the NZ Company in 1840 as reserves for the benefit of the “aboriginal chiefs, their tribes and heirs for ever”. Edward Gibbon Wakefield planed the N.Z. reserve system and his system of Native Reserves was afterwards adopted by the NZ Government in their purchase of land from the Maoris.
