Description
First Period Worcester Porcelain
First Period Worcester Porcelain Imari Dish
A rare mid 18th century Faux, though fashionable at the period, Imari inspired patterns complete with faux Chinese character marks on the bottom, confirming its authenticity as noted in all of the reference works on Worcester symbols/Marks.As per photo. It is a unique plate, well thought of enough, for someone in the 18th century(original buyer or the following owner maybe) to pay for an expensive repair on an even more valuable plate by period stapled rivets on the crack, formed I guess, post firing and painting due to the crack edge(as per photo). The design is called the Old Mosaic Pattern. It also has some grainy sand trapped under the glaze in a small part of the dish/saucer- pre firing obviously and rarely.I have not seen a non scalloped plate for sale of the 2 or three Old Mosaic pieces advertised online anywhere, if one does a google search. It would make a great unique present for the collector of Early Worcester, Worcester generally, or that of unusual, old and lovely items, From above or on a display stand, it looks superb. Please check pics Reference: Dictionary or Worcester Porcelain- John Sandon, Page 249 for discussion of pattern. Victoria & Albert Museum has a milk jug in this pattern, Museum number:
