Description
For auction - This is the final run.
A Parker Pottery bottle with Maori inspired designs, made for Lincoln Wines in the 1980's.
Could be used to hold a candle, flowers, grasses, anything!
These bottles are great. Watertight, the stopper was overrated IMO. It always snapped the cork!
Originally made at Crown Lynn but not put into production. Called the "Tiki bottle" by staff. Fine detailing similar to the Wharetana range.
Auckland Museum has several in their Crown Lynn collection. Including a white unglazed bisqued version with no branding on the base or model number. Dated to the 1950's and attributed to Dave Jenkins and Harry Hargreaves.
My research points to a design that wasn't used, but the techniques of making the bottle are identical to the technology Crown Lynn was developing at the time. The application of a sprig over a larger form. You can see this on the Auckland Museum bottle. The design is applied to a plain diamond shaped flask. See the image of the base of the white one and note the different coloured clays and layers.
I've spoken to numerous people who worked at Crown Lynn and most agree with the Auckland Museum notes.
Also I've consulted with the Hargreaves Family who say it is Harry's work without a doubt. See a discussion I had on the Crown Lynn Museum Facebook page image.
This is backed up by a drawing by Harry Hargreaves of a Manaia form on a canoe prow which closely resembles the figure on one side of the bottle. See the drawn image from the Wharetana ware notes Hargreaves wrote.
The photos of the white one are from Auckland Museum.
Norm Parker, owner of Parker Pottery was interviewed about these bottles, and said retired Crown Lynn employees were hired to make the bottles. Check this out online
So, if you want a bit of West Auckland ceramic or wine history, or a bottle as good as any Wharetana ware then this would be a must have collectable.
