Description
Delft polychrome inkwell, circa 1690, hand decorated with yellow lion heads protruding from the centre of each of the three sides.
There are three inkwells, slightly worn on the top - as is normal with some vintage and well-used early Delft items. One has a hole in the side (see photos).
There are chips and other areas of wear, but overall it is a nice example of a scarce survivor from a bygone era.
It measures 14.5cm along the three sides, which are just over 4.5cm high. The inkwells are each 0.5cm higher.
The three lions are almost 4cm in diameter.
It was bought at an estate sale in Inglewood, Taranaki, in the mid-1970s, along with several other china/porcelain items from the 1700s.
It still has on the back an original sticker on which is written - perhaps by the previous owner: Early Delft C. 1690.
