Description
Here for your consideration is a magnificent and extremely rare, 1964, Beswick figure of a Merino ram, model number 1917, designed by Arthur Gredington and discontinued in 1967.
This figure was only produced over a couple of years and most were exported to Australia and New Zealand hence it's rarity in the United Kingdom and the United States.
It depicts a beautifully coloured, gloss, grey with white face Merino ram, standing majestically with pride. It's in beautiful condition, with some real superb workmanship, manufactured by Beswick, England.
The colouring in this fabulous ceramic animal is superb .... real strong vibrant colouring, absolutely exquisite. I really don't believe my pictures are doing this figure true justice. The colours and the way they've been mixed is just truly magnificent.
The base has all the black script, Beswick distinct markings .... guaranteed 100% genuine.
Condition ..... no chips, cracks, scratches, damage or crazing. Just a very nice, extremely rare, stunning piece of Beswick pottery.
Merino Ram ...
The Merino is one of the most historically relevant and economically influential breeds of sheep, very prized for its wool. The breed was originated and improved in Extremadura, in southwestern Spain, around the 12th century. It was instrumental in the economic development of 15th and 16th century Spain, which held a monopoly on its trade, and since the end of the 18th century, it was further refined in New Zealand and Australia, giving rise to the modern Merino.
Today, Merinos are still regarded as having some of the finest and softest wool of any sheep. Horned Merino rams have long, spiral horns which grow close to the head.
