This set of Shorter and Son fish dishes has a back stamp that was in use from 1905 until 1933. So these rare dishes probably date to the 1920's.

We have owned them for quite a while and have only seen a very occasional dish in books, in the flesh and on the internet. Never, have we seen a set of six.

Bearing in mind Clarice Cliff's connection with these designs (she later married the boss, Coley Shorter) they should be highly desirable.

They were probably designed for such delicacies as oysters, mussels and cockles.

Each dish measures 18 cm in length from mouth to tail, 17 cm in width and 3 cm in depth. Each can hold 3/4 cup of liquid.

They are all hand painted. Indeed, the fin of one of the fishes (please see photos) has a fin in relief which has not been painted. Perhaps the decorator had a night out the previous day!

The dishes are all in very good condition, there are no faults.

The six of them stack together neatly.

They are great survivors of the Art Deco period.

The starting price of $95.00 for the set is very reasonable. Where would you find another?
