Description
In 1979 Yamaha introduced the FG 750S and the FG770S. By this time, the S in a model number no longer meant Sunburst as it had previously and now referred to a solid top instead. Although they were considered mid range, they essentially became the highest range FGs at the time because the all the highest speced FGs had become the L series. Enough Yamahistory. The solid top Yamahas from that era have had 40 odd years to 'open up' in terms of tone and they sound beautiful. This guitar has been setup with new strings, low action, conditioned fretboard etc etc. It plays as well as it sounds. A lot of people that talk about acoustics talk about old Yamahas and seem to like comparing them with Martins i.e this is a Martin killer and so on but after collecting, playing, and souping up hundreds of them over 30 odd years my own experience is that for 10% of the price of any big name guitar, you get a shitload more than 10% of the tonal quality and build quality by comparison and yes, sometimes they're better depending on which guitars you're comparing. It will always be subjective and in many ways pointless but it's worth saying that vintage FG Yamaha guitars are fantastic value for money.

I have heaps. westie777 (1179 • Friday, 17 May 2024 )What an Accurate description of the Yamaha Brand " a shitload of guitar for your money " I've now got 4 of them, the Quality Control involved,to maintain their degree of excellence is outstanding. If I could afford it I'd bid also. I own a Martin, and as you said 'there a Martin killer ' kind regards, Don s********y (403 • 8:21 pm, Sat, 18 May )The martin killer comment was something I've heard others say and in my opinion it's an overstatement in most cases but sometimes, depending entirely on which models you are comparing and what you are trying to achieve, it is true and at a fraction of the price. My main point is that for price vs tonal quality, vintage Yamaha is often a better deal than most $5k+ big name guitars. There is no right or wrong since all opinions of sound are totally subjective. I do appreciate your comments mate. westie777 (1179 • Saturday, 18 May 2024 )Thanks, and your right, tone is subjective, but may I just share a small comment, Recently I acquired an L series Yamaha, it needed repairs, so it became mine for small money, I fixed it, and Wow what tone, I have an FG-830,But this L series is Definitely up with the Martin sound,- regards,Don s********y (403 • 11:12 pm, Sat, 18 May )Yup, the L series has a lineage that inludes some guitars I hold in mythical regard. westie777 (1179 • Saturday, 18 May 2024 )
