Lactose intolerance is a common condition in which the sugar in dairy products (lactose) cannot be digested. This causes problems such as: Gas (wind) Bloating (abdominal distension) Pain Altered bowel habits, especially loose stool. Feeling unwell after eating certain foods.

After a 2-day prep diet, and overnight water-only fast, you collect a sample of your breath into a test tube (devide provided), then drink a lactulose solution. Breath samples are collected every 20 minutes for 3 hours. Then resume the diet, and 2 days later repeat the test using lactose (samples every 30 mins). We use gas chromatography to measure hydrogen & methane gas (& carbon dioxide) in your breath samples. You produce the carbon dioxide, but hydrogen and methane can only be produced by bacteria so we can see if lactose is being fermented.
