Description
Up for sale is an extremely rare pattern of the British Pattern 1895 Infantry Officer's Sword. These swords are extremely rare as very few of them have been manufactured during a short period of two years (1895 & 1896) before being replaced with the 1897 Pattern Sword. So if you are a collector who is interested in quality rather than quantity this sword is for you as it is probably the only one that has been up for sale on TradeMe in all the years that I have been on TradeMe The difference between the pattern 1895 sword and the 1897 swords are the blades and the hilts. The 1895 had a thicker flatter sword blade compared to the narrower dumbell-shaped blades of the 1897. The Hilts of the 1897 swords have less of a gap in their scroll design of the hilts and have a lap down to the side of their hilts to prevent fraying of the uniforms. This particular piece is in good condition with only the mouth piece of the scabbard missing which if wanted could be replaced if needed by the purchaser at a later date. Pickup allowed from Lynfield Auckland NOTE: Only the 1895 sword is for sale. The 1897 sword featured in the last few photos is only for comparison NOTE: Only listing the item once to take advantage of the success fee free day today so please bid now if you are interested in purchasing it as I won't be relisiting it. Finally I am open to reasonable offers

This is interesting as it would appear to be a P1845 blade that has been re-hilted with a P1895 hilt. All P1895's should have the 1892 style dumbell blade. Are there other markings? Perhaps you could put up a clear image of the proof disc please? a*****4 (111 • 10:30 pm, Sun, 12 May )Thanks for your interest in my listing. I have attached a photo from Harvey Wither's book (the one with the arrow) which has a P1895 sword with a simillar kind of blade. Plus an article by Paul Cowled states that there were P1892 & P1895 swords that were not in the dumbel shape (https://paulcowledswords.myportfolio.com/history-of-the-18951897-pattern). Further, I will attach a clearer photo of the proof button when I get home antiajim (352 • Sunday, 12 May 2024 )I have added a few photos of the proof button. It is not in natural light because it gets dark by the time I get back home from work Seller comment Tuesday, 14 May 2024 Thanks for the extra images, is there a serial number on the spine please. Also I see your P1897 that you have up as a comparison is etched to Public School Cadets NZ, I have one of these also and would be keen to learn the serial number of your example. Many Thanks. a*****4 (111 • 12:49 pm, Wed, 15 May )No numbering on the 1895 but 1897 has M4943 on the spine and it has a broad arrow NZ 554 on the hilt along with the names K. Mataira 1973 1974 and K Hapi 1975 and in case you want to know the maker of the sword is Robert Mole & Sons antiajim (352 • Wednesday, 15 May 2024 )
