Description
Up for sale is the iconic British 1850 Royal Artillery sword more popularly referred to as "Dundas". These are relatively rare swords as they enjoyed a very short period of service time (from 1845 to 1860) and hence they do not come up for sale very often, especially like this one which not only has its scabbard but also its leather frog. If you are a collector who is interested in QUALITY over QUANTITY then this sword is for you. Developed by Colonel W.B. Dundas who originally served as a lieutenant in the Royal Artillery during the Napoleonic Wars. It was designed to be carried by soldiers manning the field guns. As the field guns were an expensive and critical piece of equipment on the battlefield the soldiers needed to be adequately armed with a reliable sword and thus the sword is a heavy robust sword with a solid brass hilt and thick blade. These swords were normally unmarked or marked with a "BO" (Board of Ordnance) after the end of the Napoleonic Wars during times of peace when issued as an all-purpose hanger for different service branches including the customs, police and prison officers.
