Description
Up for sale is a rare British 1870 pattern Honourable Artillery Company Officer's sword with its iconic emblem of a burning grenade sitting prominently in the hilt cartouche. It has a carved knuckle bow and angled or canted pommel with exquisitely carved etching covering most of its blade. This particular piece is in perfect condition right from its sharkskin grip and copper bullion twisted wiring, exquisitely carved etching on a stain-free and totally rust-free blade which sits rock solid in its hilt without the slightest of any trace of movement. The bonus feature of the sword is that it retains its original leather and brass mounted scabbard which other than showing signs of drying is still in great condition as all its stitching is intact and the blade still fits snugly into the scabbard. So if you are a discerning collector who prefers QUALITY over QUANTITY this sword is for you as it will be a great investment, especially in the international market in the future. Established in 1537 the Honourable Artillery Company is the oldest regiment in the British Army. It was primarily a citizen militia and was raised in times of national emergency, including the Armada, the English Civil War and the Napoleonic Wars. Up until the Victorian era, officers would have followed regular infantry sword patterns. As this was a volunteer army, they would have had to pay for all the service equipment including their swords.
