Description
Antique 1924 Smith and Caughey Ltd Oak Sideboard with small manufacturing name tile.
In good used original ( no restoration work carried out whatsoever) condition. We used it as a sideboard and now it just sits as a cabinet for odds and ends. It has expected wear and tear since original purchase.
The panelled backboard was removed for storage when we came to Auckland and the screws now need to be replaced as items were lost during setting up home.
S&C sold high-end dining suites manufactured in NZ to cater to the growing middle class and wealthy clientele. This particular item likely was sold in the Auckland branch and was purchased with the the dining table and chairs (which I also have minus one of the seats which also would benefit greatly from restoration. The dowelling for the table top needs to be replaced as it snapped one day.)
I would highly recommend restoration.
This, to the best of my knowledge, is one of the last remaining in NZ. I tried unsuccessfully to find another set some years ago as a gift for my now ex sister in-law, making numerous enquiries at antique stores and op shops. I even reached out to S&C to no avail.
I am the second owner having purchased it from an elderly couple when my children were very young. They are now adults. The first owner wanted it to be used by a family, they couldn't have children. It greatly saddens me to see it go, my adult children have no interest in it and I am getting older so need to down size.
