Description

Marula Fruit Trees Size: 50-70cm above bag in PB5's Note: photo with blue background shows present early spring stage - all leaves will return during November.

Elephants and baboons LOVE eating the fruit so you probably will too. Locals in tribal areas of South Africa love these fruit and for some villagers, selling fruit at markets is a way to make ends meet. One of the most amazing and exclusive fruit tree discoveries able to grow in NZ.

Marula Botanical name: Sclerocarya birrea Full Grown Size: Like an avocado will grow quite big if space allows but when cut back early grows to citrus tree size. Related to the mango tree.

The Fruit Plum shape 3-4cm diameter. When "tree-ripened" the translucent fruit have an aromatic sweet n' sour refreshingly delicious taste.
May fruit with 1 tree but reasonable crop can only be achieved with male+female. Sex of plants not known till flowering so 3 or more are recommended. 3 for $160!

CLIMATE: Can Marula grow in NZ? Marula Fruit Trees are Sub-tropical from Africa but grow well in warmer parts of New Zealand such as: Auckland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Northland, Hawkes Bay, Far North. Trees are deciduous to last through Africa's dry season but adapt well to NZ conditions. They have water storage tuberous roots to stand the dry season but some irrigation will encourage better growth, as well as timing and size of crop. Leaves have a wax-layer to protect from drying out. We already have reports of others achieving fruit in Auckland.

NUTRITION: Excellent nutritional value with high Vitamin C. Used for emergencies to help children recover from malnutrition.

INTERESTING One of the most famous Fruit Trees in Africa, made famous in the 70\s with the Movie "Beatiful People" where it shows baboons, elephants etc getting drunk after an eating binge of overripe, fermented marula fruit. As used in Amarula grog.

Ingredient for cooking, rich cakes, loads of recipes available on google or discover your own. Freeze dried snacks etc.
