Description
/ NEAR NEW - HUGE /
A very large volume designed to provide an illustrated history of furniture throughout the world, from the furniture in the tombs of the Pharaohs, through the Renaissance, Baroque, and the 18th century through to the 20th.
It is illustrated throughout with 52 full colour plates and over 1000 black-and-white photographs.
The book presents an overview of Egyptian, Grecian, Roman, Byzantine and early mediaeval, and Gothic furniture, then the serious stuff starts.
While concentrating on Europe and England, the book also considers the styles of China, Japan, Middle East, India and Southeast Asia. It then finishes with a review of the 20th century up to 1960.
It is essentially a fully-illustrated history of furniture throughout the world from ancient Egypt to the 20th century.
In this fascinating survey we can see how, in the progress of civilization, individuals and societies have created for themselves interiors of austere solemnity, extreme luxury or exquisite delicacy.
World Furniture: An Illustrated History edited by Helena Hayward is a 1973 sixth impression published by Hamlyn, London.
It is a heavy 2.7kg extra-large format 320-page 26x34.5cm hard cover with dust jacket (small nibble to top edge) in near-new condition with excellent photographs and text.
