Synopsis
This "Complete History of the Ranfurly Shield" follows NZ's most important provincial rugby competition from the first three challenge matches in 1904 until the end of the 1959 season.
The first part of the book studies the Shield "in retrospect" recording its origins, important developments in the competition, trends or changes to its administration and its dominance in the Rugby community interest, second only to the All Blacks. This section is illustrated with cartoons by Nevile Lodge.
Part two lists challange matches and results in chronological order, part three a match summary compiled with provinces listed alphabetically. while part four, Records and Performances. presents a mass of Shield statistics. It would be fair to say that this book covers the Golden Age of Shield rugby. The author was NZ Rugby Union official historian.
