Description
The Turanga Journals New Zealand 1840 - 1850 - Letters and Journals of William and Jane Williams Missionaries to Poverty Bay
Dust cover has wear n tear 659 Pages Book is in great condition
In January 1840 William and Jane Williams landed at Turanga (Poverty Bay) to begin the first East Coast mission station. The Turanga Journals, the earliest first hand European account of life at Poverty Bay, consists of their letters, journals and diaries written during the mission’s first ten years. What they did before and after this decade is told biographically. William and Jane did not simply live ‘at Poverty’. Through their letters and through William's missionary journals they were closely in touch with the busy, gossipy, complicated Maori-missionary-Government- settler scene of the whole colony. By use of other contemporary material in the footnotes and year notes, the editor has sought to bring the present day reader into that scene.
