John Savage’s Some Account of New Zealand was the first book written entirely about New Zealand, and the first to describe the country from the point of view of one who lived among the Maoris The style is simple and the personal observations necessarily superficial, but Savage’s lively and enquiring mind missed little of importance during his visit in 1805. Of particular interest is the escorting of “Moyhanger” to London (the first Maori to visit England) and his reactions to British civilisation. Some Account of New Zealand, which includes illustrations and a Vocabulary, was first published in 1807.
