The Matthew papers are a recent "find." Dr. J. Rutherford, Professor of History at Auckland University College, assisted in the appeal launched by the New Zealand National Historical Committee for documents on the early history of the Colony. With the help of Dr. A. J. Harrop he go into touch with the descendants of Felton Mathew, New Zealand's first Surveyor General-Lady Olivier, Mrs McCleary and Dr. T. G. Crump. The latter were in due course persuaded to donate the whole of the Mathew manuscripts to the New Zealand Government, and they will in due course be deposited in the Auckland Public Library, where they will form a valuable addition to the archives, not only of Auckland City and Province, but of New Zealand as a whole. 'Felton Mathew's journals and letters tell in detail the story of Hobson's mission, the cruise of H.M.S Herald, the negotiation of the Treaty of Waitangi, and all the circumstances attendant on the choice and foundation of the capital and the early work of survey of the Colony. He brings the story of New Zealand down to 1847, the year of his death, and gives many interesting sidelights on the events of the pioneer years. His story is by no means confined to Auckland. The Native troubles at Nelson, Wanganui and Taranaki are dealt with, and there are many commentaries on the general affairs of the colony, by one whose official position enabled him to write with "inside" knowledge. Mathew was also something of an artist, and several of his New Zealand sketches have been reproduced in volume.
