Description
War and Peace, 2 cds, opens in St Petersburg, Russia, as upper-class aristocrats worry about Napoleon Bonaparte and his troops advancing through Europe towards them. Main characters include Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a count who wants a share of his father’s riches; Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who goes off to fight in the war; and Natasha, the beautiful daughter of a nobleman, loved by both men. There are exciting battles and bear hunts; unwise marriages and unrequited love. Plus plenty of scandal and insight into Russian society, along with Pierre’s penetrating insights into the insanity of war.Read by Edward Petherbridge. Good condition. Stephen King described The Turn of the Screw, 2 cds, as a great work of supernatural horror. Others have called it one of the most chilling ghost stories ever written. The story concerns a governess caring for two children at a remote estate. She becomes convinced that the grounds are haunted. It’s told by an unnamed narrator gathered around a fire on Christmas Eve with some of his friends. One of them, Douglas, reads the manuscript written by his sister's late governess. It tells the story of her being hired by a man who has become responsible for his young niece and nephew following the deaths of their parents. He lives mainly in London and they will stay at a country house in Bly, Essex. Read by Carole Bond. Good condition. Includes 14-page full-colour illustrated background booklet. See my other listings. Happy to combine postage.
