Description
A large photographic image of a unique 1895 train derailment.
At 4pm on the 22nd October 1895 with the driver attempting to make up time, his train crashed through the buffer stop and wall at the Gare Montparnasse terminus and onto the Place de Rennes(street) below, as captured in this image from a photograph taken at the scene. The 131 passengers all survived, however a young woman was killed from fallen masonry on the street. The driver received a fine and served two months in prison. The train company settled with the woman's family and arranged for the education of her two young children.
The print measures 58cm by 78cm and is in reasonable condition. It's frame would've had glass, but that has been lost and the frame itself has quite a few scrapes.
