Description
An original oil on canvas painting titled "Old Naseby 1929". The artwork has modern white framing and I cannot see a signature.
I believed the scene to be of Naseby in Central Otago, but a couple of Trade Me members have insisted it is not, but rather of Naseby in the UK. Hence I've changed the original description.
Naseby, UK is a small village and famously the site of the Battle of Naseby on 14 June 1645. Fought during the English Civil War between Cromwell's Parliamentarian Roundheads and Charles I Royalist Cavaliers and at which the defeat of the King ended any real hope of victory.
Naseby NZ was named after the former and at it's peak had a population of 4000 gold miners and 14 hotels. But the construction of a railway line in 1898 to nearby Ranfurly rather than Naseby, brought with it an inevitable reduction in the numbers drawn to the town. By 1929 gold mining had also declined and the population had dropped dramatically - hence why it seemed this Naseby would be the scene of the painting, particularly as the painting is also found here.
The painting measures 28cm by 38cm, it's modern frame 42cm by 52cm. The artwork is protected behind glass and in generally good condition with some minor pinholes present at the top(see photo).
