Description
A substantial vintage photographic image of Coleridge Power Station, Canterbury.
The Coleridge hydroelectric station is at Lake Coleridge on the Rakaia River and about 100km from Christchurch. In fact, it was constructed and opened in 1914 to supply electricity to ChCh. Rather than having a dam; with the lake at a higher elevation than the river beside, the station is gravity-fed via inlets from the lake into the turbine hall/chamber. As of 2023, the station's capacity is 45 megawatts with 5 operative turbines.
I would date this photographic picture to the 1970s or thereabouts. I believe the specific date on the back is 6/2/73.
The visible image measures 47cm by 38cm(the frame 55cm by 46cm), it's protected behind a perspex/clear plastic and is ready to hang.
In good condition, see photos.
