Beautiful piece from yesteryear
MILLICENT (ROMA) TRACEY Roma Tracey(nee Bailey)was born in 1908 and spent her formative years living with her family in Sumner where she attended Sumner School from 1913 to 1923. During that time she developed a strong interest in sport (particularly Tennis and Hockey) art and music. In 1920 and 1922 she took Royal College of Music(London)examinations and around the same time exhibited flower painting and drawing in the under 14 section of the Sumner and Redcliffs Horticultural Society’s annual show. In the mid- 1920s Roma attended Canterbury College School of Art where her principal teacher was Cecil Kelly. In the early 1930s she became interested in Kindergarten teaching as a career and took Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association examinations, graduating in 1935.Soon after she began teaching specialising in teaching art. Following her marriage in 1940 to Percy Richard Tracey she continued to teach up until her children were born. By the early 1960s her family had begun to grow up and she focused once again more seriously on her painting, and in 1963 she joined the Canterbury Society of Arts as a working member. That same year she also submitted a painting titled ‘The Ford’ in the Hay’s Art Competition. Roma also joined the Town and Country Art Group after it was formed in 1967.From this time up until just before her death she exhibited regularly and during the 1980s held many solo exhibitions of her paintings, ink illustrations and pottery. Roma lived the latter decades of her life at Centaurus Rd Christchurch, and died in 1996.
