Description
An original pen and pencil artwork titled "Flower Study" by Australian artist William Torrance(1912-1988).
William Torrance was born in Sydney, but lived most of his life in Brisbane. In the mid/late 1930s he studied at a Technical College, specifically freehand drawing - quickly receiving recognition and awards. After WWII he took up painting, in both oils and watercolours and in the 1950s he was a finalist for the prestigious Wynne Prize and even more significantly he was three times an Archibald Prize finalist.
Torrance was also an author and illustrator with perhaps his favourite subject being maritime studies, particularly boats.
This artwork consists of sketches using ink and pencil and as such is quite likely to be an early work. At the bottom there's a metal nameplate of the artist. The frame is solid heavy wood and measures 42cm by 46cm. The artwork is protected behind glass and ready to be hung.
Condition is good and appropriate to a vintage age with minor marks and there's also a stain at the top left corner of the surround.
William Torrance artworks do not appear often, but when they do, they attract substantive auction estimates and the highest realised price I've found to date was A$1300 for an oil painting.
