An original monotype titled "After Rain" by the significant Australian artist Thomas(Tom) Balfour Garrett(1879-1952). The artist has signed and titled beneath the image. The scene features trees through which you can see an expanse of water and a small figure in green seated at the water's edge.

Tom Garrett was born in Tasmania and attended the Hutchins School, as did Errol Flynn, though many years later. Garrett moved to Melbourne in 1900 and later settled in Sydney. Initially a 'man of the cloth', Garrett wasn't to become a full-time career artist until later in life. His first solo exhibition, featuring watercolours, took place in Sydney in 1929. In fact, so successful was it, that he was soon exhibiting throughout much of Australia. He was to become one of the most prolific artists in Australasia and there are records of numerous artworks sold at Public Fine Art Auctions.

Garrett is most renowned for his "mastery" of the monotype. A monotype is the art of applying paint or ink directly onto a plate of glass or silver and pressing onto moistened paper, thereby producing a unique, one-off and original image. It was said that "There is a softness about the monotype" that fits perfectly "Garrett's artistic expression". Most of Garrett's artworks are monotype, such as this example, although you will also come across some watercolours and fewer still, oils.

Garrett is represented in the Nat Gallery of Australia and State Art Galleries of NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. His artworks are also in the Hocken Collection, Dunedin Public Art Gallery and Suter Gallery in NZ.

The monotype image measures 23cm by 21cm(the frame 42cm by 41cm), it's protected behind glass and in good condition.

At Public Auction, the highest price paid for a Garrett monotype is AUS $7725, with at least 20 achieving AUS $5000 and with an average of AUS $1850.
