The practice of steeping twigs & leaves of witch hazel plant originated with Connecticut's Native American population & produced a mild astringent used as a family remedy for minor ills such as bruises & insect bites
"Witch" in witch-hazel has its origins in Middle English wiche, meaning "pliant" or "bendable"
Founded in 1875 by Edward E Dickinson, the family-controlled company lasted more than 100 years, surviving the Depression & both World Wars, until it was sold in 1983 to the German pharmaceutical concern, Merz Inc
