Description
Fiji hosted a visit by Queen Elizabeth II in 1963, and two values of the 1952 definitive issue were overprinted to celebrate. Here is a cover sent from Suva to Auckland in 1963 with three of the 3d Royal Visit commemorative on.
SG 326.
Fiji is an island nation in Melanesia in the South Pacific Ocean about 2,000 km northeast of New Zealand's North Island. It was a former British colony.
The first stamps of Fiji were issued on 1 November 1870 by the local newspaper, the Fiji Times. The British Consul objected to the service and tried to close it in 1871 and appointed an official Postmaster and the Fiji Times service was closed in 1872.
- Stamps were issued by the Kingdom of Fiji in 1871, showing a ‘CR’ monogram for ‘Cakobau Rex', the King of Fiji.
- A British colony was established over Fiji in 1874. Previous issues of the Kingdom of Fiji were overprinted VR for "Victoria Regina", the royal cypher of Queen Victoria. Later issues had designs with a VR monogram.
- Stamps with designs common to the British colonies were issued in 1903. The first pictorial set was issued in 1938.
- Fiji achieved independence in 1970.
- In 2009, the Fiji Court of Appeal overturned the High Court decision that Bainimarama's takeover of Qarase's government was lawful & declared the interim government to be illegal. Bainimarama agreed to step down as interim prime minister immediately, along with his government, & President Iloilo was to appoint a new prime minister. President Iloilo abrogated the constitution, & removed all office holders under the constitution including all judges & the governor of the Central Bank. In his own words, he "appoint[ed] [him]self as the Head of the State of Fiji under a new legal order". He then reappointed Bainimarama under his "New Order" as interim prime minister and imposed a "Public Emergency Regulation" limiting internal travel and allowing press censorship.
