Description
This is a rare find...usually only found in Museum collections.
This is a giant Tewhatewha which means it is more than likely a chiefs weapon. The smaller more common Tewhatewha was for the foot soldiers. As has been explained to me by a collector of Maori artefacts ... At the start of some conflict's when the warring tribes where facing up, the 2 chiefs would walk towards each other with the soldiers behind, when one of the chiefs struck his Tewhatewha into the ground then the conflict would start.
There is some original maori carving near the base of the shaft.
Webbs Catalogue description ... In orthodox gigantic form with chiefly status as a weapon of command. The significant size suggests it was a "war maker'. Used to stake the ground which was to be fought for and protected. Some impact damage apparent on blade. Manaia with Paua missing on lower shaft. Moa or , Huia or kiwi feather missing at top of shaft Rich dark patina. Length 1500, Width 267mm Diameter 39mm Y5038
