Description
HMS NEW ZEALAND Solid SILVER Crew-Presentation Medallion
Struck in 1913 By W.R. Bock Wellington
SOLID SILVER medallion commemorating the visit of HMS New Zealand to Auckland in 1913
SIZE = 36 mm
WEIGHT = 30.49 Grams 0.925 (Sterling SILVER)
The medal was presented by the City of Auckland to the officers & crew of HMSNZ during the battleship’s visit to Auckland 29th April-10 May 1913
Medallist = William Rose Bock, engraver, working in Wellington NZ
CONDITION = Hevily use-worn exactly as-seen in my several images
UNIQUELY In my experience RECIPIENT-NAMED to one "Boy V. Sowden J6633" (unresearched) but I would expect that young Mr Sowden was one of the HMS New Zealand's Ship Boys who would appear to have proudly worn his medallion as a medal
ONLY the ONE (1) Medal (Medallion) is offered here and SHOWN in images # 1 through # 9
I have shown another (long-ago-SOLD) mint uncirculated example of the same medallion issue UN-NAMED as is usually seen
HMS New Zealand was one of three Indefatigable-class battlecruisers built for the defence of the British Empire.
Launched in 1911, the ship was funded by the govt of NZ as a gift to Britain, & she was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1912.
She had been intended for the China Station, but was released by the NZ Govt. at the request of the Admiralty for service in British waters
