This large 27.5x41cm page is from the 1583 printing of Notes on The Holy Bible and cleverly uses type in various languages.

It was printed in Antwerp, the Netherlands, by Christopher Plantin, the outstanding scholar-printer of his age, to accompany the new Bible authorised during the reign of Pope Sixtus V, which he also printed.

It uses the superb new Roman typeface designed by Plantin’s master artisan Pieter Huys.

Produced on a movable-type press, each leaf (page) is a unique piece of ancient artwork which was hand printed then bound together by hand with other pages into whole books.

Because they were printed on 100% rag cotton or linen sheet - not wood-pulp paper like today’s books - they are in excellent condition after hundreds of years and are still strong, durable and safe to handle.

Most paper items from the 1500s to the mid-1880s are in much better condition than those from later eras.

No complete book was destroyed to obtain this page. Following the principles of the antiquarian book trade, it was rescued from a book which was incomplete or otherwise defective - perhaps partly burned, water damaged or damp or mouldy, or in such a battered condition repair was impractical.
