Description
Patt 1827 British & Commonwealth Royal NAVY Officer's SWORD by Edward Thurkle Snr
Some collectors of British military swords will be familiar with the name Thurkle, but relatively few realise how important this family name was in British sword making history
Most collectors can instantly recount all manner of details about Wilkinson, or perhaps even Mole, due to the scales of their businesses & military contracts by the end of the 19th Cent, but Thurkle's name deserves to be remembered in the same category as a handful of smaller but important makers (such as Reeves and Pillin) who produced more swords than most people realise
The Thurkle family specialised in British officers' swords in earlier years, but by the later decades of the 19th Cent the Thurkle name was to be found on officers' swords in the U SA & on cavalry troopers' sabres in India
In the Victorian era there were countless retailers of swords & other military equipment, but very few of these were actually making their own sword blades
The vast majority were purchasing swords, or at least the blades & scabbards, from specialised sword makers then etching their own name & address onto the ricasso
Some retailers hilted the blades themselves & thus described themselves as 'sword makers', but only a few companies were actually making the blades by the middle of the 19th Cent
Thurkle was one such maker of blades, along with the likes of Wilkinson, Mole, Reeves, Pillin & a few others
We often find the proof slugs of these makers on swords marked to & retailed by outfitters
The Thurkle sword making family is not well documented now & sadly their company records were reportedly destroyed in a fire in 1912
However, we do know that they were a dynasty of makers who started business in 1749 & they continued until 1897, when bought-out by the outfitter JR Gaunt
The majority of the surviving antique swords marked to Thurkle (or with a Thurkle proof slug were made under Edward Thurkle senior (lived 1833-1895)

Is there a scabbard with the sword t***********0 (8 • 5:16 am, Fri, 10 May )Rather clearly NO. No sword belt. No user manual, Nothing not seen in the images of my sword is included phillipjames (9003 • Friday, 10 May 2024 )Rather clearly then thanks but NO thanks t***********0 (8 • 3:42 pm, Fri, 10 May )32+ years as a full-time licenced and registered antique dealer, 21 years making my full-time living on TradeMe. It's vaguely possible that I entirely FORGOT to photograph or mention a scabbard, WERE THERE ONE? but unlikely in the extreme. Especially given that I had maxed out the number of photos allowed, AND used every descriptive character of TM's idiotically restrictive LIMIT of characters. 21 years of idiot questions does tend to drain a seller's patience. phillipjames (9003 • Friday, 10 May 2024 )Watch your use of caps let’s leave there t***********0 (8 • 4:32 pm, Sat, 11 May )I will use "caps" for emphasis if, when, & as OFTEN, as I feel appropriate. I will NOT seek advice on how to run my auctions by some TradeMe NEWBY with 7 feedbacks. Please refrain from offering me advice, it is NOT WELCOME your "questions" are TEDIOUS so WATCH your tendency to waste my time. Its possible that one day you might wish to buy one of my items? but SADLY you were unable to bid, because ODDLY? My patience NOT INFINITE. Please DO NOTE that no one else felt the need to ask what you did? phillipjames (9003 • Saturday, 11 May 2024 )Whatever, take care no offence intended t***********0 (8 • 5:10 pm, Sat, 11 May ). phillipjames (9003 • Saturday, 11 May 2024 )Everdently 32+ years hasnt inparted any customer service n*****e (154 • 10:00 am, Tue, 14 May )"Everdently"? 32 years? "inparted"? Your illiteracy is offensive. A wiser man than you (most would be) once said "It is better to remain silent and be thought foolish, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt" Good bye phillipjames (9003 • Tuesday, 14 May 2024 )
